Bad Dental Health Bites

If you haven’t taken a peek at your pet’s teeth lately, you might want to lift the lip and have a look. Why? Because just like humans, when pets don’t get regular dental care, it can be a mouthful of trouble.

Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease isn’t just about bad breath: left untreated, it can cause gum infections, tooth loss, problems eating, and severe pain. At later stages, bacteria can travel to internal organs, resulting in serious illness.

Periodontal disease is entirely preventable! At Carnegie Hill Veterinarians, we emphasize preventative dental care: home brushing if possible, regular exams, and anesthetic cleanings.

At-Home Cleaning Isn't Enough

Even with at-home brushing, dental cleanings will still occasionally be necessary. We have a state-of-the-art dental suite, and offer comprehensive services including cleanings, exams, X-rays, extractions, and oral surgery.

Dental X-rays are an important part of any cleaning because they allow us to see problems below the gum line, where most dental disease lives. This includes checking for bone loss, infections, fractures, and tooth reabsorption—a painful problem common in cats.
